Temple University Summer Study Abroad Programs

Temple University summer study abroad programs are open to qualified students matriculated at U.S. colleges and universities.

Offerings include programs based at our international campuses in Rome and Tokyo, as well as other programs around the world led by Temple University faculty.

Programs

BRAZIL

Afro-Brazilian Culture and Popular Brazilian Music

Temple University in Brazil: Afro-Brazilian Culture and Popular Brazilian Music provides exceptional educational opportunities for undergraduate students of African-American studies, Latin American studies, Portuguese, Spanish, history, music, dance, art and related disciplines to study Brazilian culture, civilization and music. Based in the historic center of Salvador, the program includes two Latin American Studies courses taught in English by Dr. Kenneth Dossar of Temple University, as well as supplementary non-credit Portuguese language instruction provided by Diálogo Language School during the first half of the program. Through cultural workshops, field trips and meetings with local leaders and artists, students have access to a wealth of unique experiences.

FRANCE

French Language at the Sorbonne

Spend an unforgettable summer in Paris studying French at the Sorbonne, one of the world's great universities. Temple University's program allows you to further your study of French language and culture with intensive in-class language instruction while exploring life in the great city of Paris. Courses at the Sorbonne are designed to fit individual needs, whether you are a student with basic French or a student with more experience.

GERMANY

Intensive German Language

This is a four-week program of German language instruction taught at the Herder Institut of the University of Leipzig in Saxony. The program is designed for students who have had at least one semester of German and is best suited for those who are looking for an immersive experience with ample opportunity for independent exploration of German culture. Included are tours and the orientation period in Berlin, as well as intensive instruction leading to four credits in an appropriate Temple University German course.

INDIA

Culture, Art and Religion

The Temple University in India summer program, based in the medieval desert town of Dhrangadhra, Gujarat, is intended to investigate Indian civilization through an anthropological study of its religious and artistic traditions, both ancient and contemporary. Upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students may apply.

The mode of study is highly experiential and combines workshops, field trips and short apprenticeships. Each student conducts an independent field research project, focusing on an area of particular interest. Study is supervised by Dr. Jayasinhji Jhala, associate professor of anthropology at Temple University, whose lectures supplement the curriculum. Local academics, performers, artists and religious leaders also address and instruct the students.

As this is an experiential learning opportunity, students with technical skills such as video making and photography; studio skills such as painting, sculpture and jewelry making; or performance skills in dance, music, theater or yoga, are encouraged to apply.

ITALY

Rome Summer Session

Temple University Rome offers a six-week summer session comprised of undergraduate courses in several disciplines, as well as internships. The program is open to qualified students matriculated at U.S. colleges and universities. In addition to three full-day excursions outside of Rome, a main feature of the Temple Rome summer program is frequent, on-site instruction for many of the courses, enabling students to study firsthand the sites, artistic treasures, traditions and business practices associated with the people and history of Italy. Whether you are studying art history or management, these visits bring academic subjects to life and expose you to daily life in Rome.

Rome Graduate Seminar in Aesthetics and Cultural Studies: Vision and Rationality

Temple University Rome offers a four-week graduate seminar designed to bring together the disciplines of aesthetics and cultural studies. In its interdisciplinary thrust, the six-credit seminar is intended to serve as a foundation for advanced study in the human sciences and to reflect the most current trends of thought in post-modern culture. The seminar convenes at Temple University's campus in Rome.

Advanced undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students in fields such as literature, film studies, philosophy, art and social theory are welcome to apply. The seminar entails an intensive program of class work, field trips and guest lectures, and the city of Rome is used extensively as a resource. All classes are taught in English.

Excavation at the Roman Villa of Artena

Students in the course will participate at the excavation of a Roman villa in Artena, a small hill town approximately 40 miles south-east of Rome, under the direction of Temple University Rome faculty member and archaeologist Jan Gadeyne and his colleague Cécile Brouillard, who works for the French Institute for Preventive Archaeology (INRAP). The site, occupied since the archaic age (6th century BC) has revealed substantial remains of a Roman villa and other buildings that existed from the 1st century BC until at least the 7th century AD. About 13,000 sq. ft. of the villa have thus far been excavated. The complex comprises an atrium and spacious peristyle with several rooms around it and a small private bath complex. Parts of it were decorated with wall paintings and mosaic floors. An aqueduct and large cistern underneath the atrium and peristyle supplied the villa with water. The villa offers insight into the rural life and economy of central Lazio. It also illustrates the transformation of the villa from a simple farmhouse to a more sophisticated residence to a medieval settlement in the countryside around Rome.

JAMAICA

International Service Learning

For students who wish to work in multidisciplinary teams supporting the work of schools, agricultural cooperatives, public health and other community partners. Academics and community-based work are integrated into the coursework, stressing the connections between economic and social development, culture, history, and formal and informal education. Open to multiple majors.

JAPAN

Full Length Tokyo Summer Session

Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), offers a summer session giving undergraduates the opportunity to choose from a broad range of courses, including several focusing on Asia, and to study alongside bilingual Japanese students. Japanese language is offered at all levels, beginning through advanced. Courses are taught by distinguished faculty and, except for language courses, are conducted in English. The TUJ academic calendar is comprised of three semesters; the summer session is not a special program for U.S. or international students, but one of the regular academic semesters. As a result, U.S. you can expect to take advantage of all of the regular academic and extracurricular offerings normally found during the academic year, including a wide range of courses and an active student life.

Tyler Interdisciplinary Art Workshop

For students of drawing, painting, digital photography and digital printmaking who wish to participate in an intensive art workshop. Based at Temple University, Japan Campus.

SPAIN

Spanish Language, Literature & Culture

The Temple in Spain summer program is designed for students with at least one year of university-level Spanish. The program is based at the University of Oviedo in the province of Asturias, a beautiful region of ocean, mountains and Roman ruins in northwest Spain. The program is comprised of coursework in Spanish language, literature and culture taught at the University of Oviedo by native Spanish-speaking professors and by Temple University professors Jaime Durán and Montserrat Piera. Students enroll in a total of six credits: three credits of language and three credits of literature or cultural studies. The first five days of the program take place in Madrid, where faculty conduct an orientation program, and where students have the opportunity to explore Spain's capital city and its environs before traveling to Oviedo to begin classes. The period in Madrid also includes day excursions to such nearby cities as Avila, Segovia and Toledo.

Eligibility

Temple University summer programs are open to qualified students matriculated at U.S. colleges and universities.

For all summer programs, to be eligible, applicants must:

• possess a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale from all colleges/universities attended.
• be enrolled as a full-time matriculated student at the time of application.
• not be on academic and/or disciplinary probation or warning.
• intend a full-time program of study while abroad and be applying credits earned toward a degree.
• meet any additional, program-specific eligibility requirements, if applicable; please see individual program descriptions for more details.
  

Students will be selected mainly on the basis of their intellectual purpose and emotional maturity.

Once accepted, we provide you with detailed pre-departure materials designed to guide you in preparing yourself for your time abroad. Pre-departure materials are specific to your destination and include:

• Billing document, containing confirmed tuition and program fees, and payment policies
