The CIEE Difference
Coursework
Use a two-week intensive Spanish course to build a vocabulary and language skills essential to the fields of business and economics. For the next six week, you’ll utilize those skills while interning full-time with a Spanish company, offering you hands-on exposure and experience in an international work environment.
Culture
Enjoy a number of field trips and excursions to points of interest in and around Seville and Andalusia. Excursions may include visiting such sites as Huelva, Córdoba, Carmona, Cádiz, and Itálica. Weekly activities include visits to sites around Seville, cooking classes, and hiking.
The study abroad program also includes a three–day guided visit to Morocco, where you’ll experience the cultural, economic, religious, and social differences between your host country and this developing North African country. While in Morocco, take part in a cultural and language exchange with business students from the EcoleNationale de Commerce et de Gestion in Tangiers, and visit Moroccan businesses involved in exporting to the United States and to the European Union.
Credit
Total recommended credit for the Internship program is 6 semester/9 quarter hours.
The Business Internship has 135 contact hours and the Spanish for Students of Business has 45 contact hours

About Seville
Capital of Andalusia, Seville was one of the last footholds of the Moorish empire that ruled the Iberian Peninsula. It is home to the ingenious Barber of Seville and the tempestuous Carmen. The great Renaissance painters Velázquez and Murillo were born here, and Ferdinand and Isabel ruled Spain from the royal apartments in the Alcazar Palace. Though the city preserves its past, modern Seville is the commercial hub of Andalusia. For a city of fewer than 800,000, Seville offers amazing cultural activities, from flamenco to classical, pop, and jazz concerts.
Where You’ll Study
The CIEE Study Center is located in a beautifully renovated Sevillano palace built in 1725. It is centrally located close to the Puerta de la Carne and about 10 minutes by foot from the main Universidad de Sevilla building (the Tabacalera). CIEE student services and CIEE administration are housed here. In addition, CIEE professors have offices in the CIEE Study Center, so that students may speak with them privately about issues related to their progress in class.
Housing & Meals
Housing, all meals, and laundry privileges are included for study abroad students living in Spanish-speaking private homes. Students may live alone or they may choose to be placed with another student, each in their own room. Living in a homestay is the best way to improve language skills and feel a part of the local culture. Given the size of the city, all students should expect to use public transportation to commute from their place of residence to their classes.
Academic Program
The Internship program offers a unique opportunity for study abroad students to increase their business vocabulary, immerse themselves—both linguistically and professionally—in a foreign setting, and gain practical experience on the job. The Internship program incorporates an intensive Spanish for Students of Business course, which increases the student’s business vocabulary and conversational skills, as well as an internship in a local Spanish company. For the internship, students complete 100 hours of on-site work. They also conduct a research project and participate in weekly seminars, which involve training in public speaking and leadership.
Academic Culture
The study abroad program offers students the opportunity to develop both their professional profile and Spanish language skills. Through a combination of coursework and related lectures, students have an unparalleled opportunity to observe, and even participate, in Spain’s economy and business management practices. Students are expected to speak Spanish at all times in class, at their place of residence, and with fellow students.
While extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute greatly to the student’s overall European experience, attendance in class and at required events is mandatory. Early departure for or late return from the weekend is not allowed. Any extended travel should take place prior to the start or upon completion of the program.
Nature of Classes
Spanish classes are with other CIEE study abroad students only. The internship places students with local Spanish businesses.
CIEE Community Language Commitment
Students take part in the CIEE Community Language Commitment by speaking Spanish at all times (except in emergencies). This fosters a learning community that contributes to both Spanish language proficiency and understanding of Spanish society.
Grading System
Final grades for the Internship program are based on completion of the 100 work hours; an evaluation by the internship sponsor; seminar attendance and participation; and completion of a professional journal, report, and presentation. Attendance is mandatory, and unexcused absences are reflected in the participant’s final grade. Class attendance and participation is essential.
