Specific Travel Dates: May 18th - June 1st.  A portion of the course will be conducted in the Spring semester.

Overview The Wake Forest Japan Engineering Program was created for students to delve into the nuances regarding sustainable practices relating to drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment, water management, and water use innovation. The program will be held in Makuhari, in the Chiba prefecture (~35 minutes train ride to Central Tokyo) at the Institute for the International Education of Students Abroad Tokyo Center. Students will have the opportunity to be immersed in Japanese culture as a burgeoning global engineer.
 
Location Makuhari, a modern city in Chiba prefecture, which is in the Greater Tokyo Area. The Center space is a 20-minute train ride from Tokyo Disneyland, a 30-minute train ride from Tokyo Station on the Keiyo Line, and is a convenient distance to Narita airport. It is within walking distance of public transportation, Kanda University of International Studies, and many public amenities.

Course: EGR 301 - Sustainable Engineering Design for a Changing Environment 
3 hours
Pre-Requisite: EGR 211 / Co-Requisite: EGR 212

Students will learn how water engineered systems protect both people and the environment, as well as the trade-offs between engineered systems that support society and economic growth. Additionally, students will explore current environmental issues and identify the roles that engineers have played in creating sustainable solutions.

Classes during abroad travel will take place from Monday through Thursday from 9am-12pm with excursions placed throughout the abroad program.

Dr. Kyana Young is an Associate Professor and the Associate Chair in the Department of Engineering at Wake Forest University (North Carolina, United States).  She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Biology Department, the Environment and Sustainability Program, African American Studies, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Her research interests include water treatment (drinking, stormwater runoff, wastewater), human rights, disaster relief, education, social action, and K-12 outreach at the intersection of environmental engineering and public health.
Accommodation Students will stay in a shared hotel in Chiba.  Hotel includes buffet breakfast and WIFI. 
Excursions Excursions include: Miraikan Museum (National Museum of Emerging Science & Innovation), National Museum of Nature & Science, WHAT Museum, Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art, and Hakone.
Selection The leading faculty is responsible for the selection of each group based on the following criteria:

*Academic suitability
*Social and emotional maturity
*Seriousness of the student in pursuing the academic and cultural aims of the program
Costs The total cost of Spring Short-term study abroad program can be broken down into three categories:

Program Fee - Usually covers room, in-country travel, excursions, some meals and other costs associated with the program.
Airfare – Varies per location. Students are responsible for their own airfare unless otherwise noted.
Personal Expenses – These will vary depending on the students' spending habits, cost of living in the destination country, and the number of meals included in the program fee. This may also include visa fees, vaccinations, academic supplies/books and other miscellaneous daily expenses.

Program Fee - $3,850

Personal costs (will fluctuate per student spending and location):
Airfare - $1,800 (estimated)
Personal Expenses - $820 (estimated)

Estimated Total Cost: $6,470
Scholarships Scholarships are available through the Center for Global Programs and Studies.

The deadline for short-term scholarships is November 15th. 
Visa & Passport Passport Information
Students need to check their passport's expiration date and ensure that it will be valid for at least 6 months after the program's end date.

Students going on a spring short-term program need to make sure their passport is valid through at least January of the following year.

US passport holders who need to renew their passport should visit the U.S. Department of State's passport website for information on this process.

Non-US passport holders who need to renew their passport should refer to their home country's passport office.

Visa Information
If you are a US citizen, you most likely will not require a visa for your summer abroad program. If you do, details will be shared with you by GPS. Non-US passport holders should check with their host country's embassy or consulate to find out if a visa is required for their program or not.
